Often it comes across as a gimmick that doesn't do anything for the story. And they usually suffer from poor pacing as the characters have to spend half their time just walking from place to place. But this film really pulls it off well. It's briskly paced, and very exciting. The central performances are all really solid. And the production design and cinematography are outstanding. It a gorgeous movie to look at, and well worth experiencing on a big screen.
